1 Peter 3:15
One of the most effective evangelistic tools is our own personal testimony or life story of how we met the Lord Jesus Christ and how He has worked in our lives. When we are sharing the Good News, people can debate about theological issues, but one thing that they can not argue about is our own story, and how we met Jesus and what He means to us.
Like the apostle Paul sharing about his dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus in which he finally met Jesus face to face, we too can transform the lives of others by sharing our conversion story. With this in mind, members of every CIM Canada’s short term missions team has to prepare their “story” before heading overseas. They rehearse their stories with different lengths and emphasis. They need to be prepared to share their testimony on the spot when circumstances called for it. Often times, on visitations, and in more formal settings, I would call a member of the team to share their testimony. I pick the person whose story would be the most effective in the situation. It is very exciting to see how a team member’s story touches the lives of the people we are ministering to and points them towards Jesus Christ.
I have also shared my testimony on numerous occasions, and in this month’s news update, I would like to briefly share my story.

I was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, grew up in a Christian home and started attending church even before I was born in my mother’s womb. I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour when I was six years old. I still remember the night. My mom used to tell me Bible bedtime stories before I went to bed. On this particular night, I can not remember the story that she told, but I do remember her explaining to me that I was a sinner and that I needed to have a personal relationship with Jesus in order to be right with God. That night changed my life. When I was 15 years old, I attended a missions conference in Regina, Saskatchewan. Now, I don’t know how many of you have been to conferences before, but usually there is some kind of an altar call. On the last night of that conference, I felt the Lord speaking to me when the call came for full-time ministry. I made a promise to the Lord that I would do it if and when He needed me. Twelve years later, I was called upon. In the meantime, I’ve gone through two career changes from engineering to life insurance and have moved throughout western Canada. All the while, the Lord was leading me and preparing me for ministry.
In November of 1993, I drove down to Seattle from Calgary with a few friends for what I call a Sportsweekend. We saw a Sonics basketball game and a Seahawk football game. On the way back, as we were driving through the mountains, we hit a severe snowstorm. To make matters worse, we had to drive through the night because one of my friends had to be back the next morning for an exam. To make a long story short, the driver lost control of the car on the ice. We did a few 360’s and then we flipped into a ditch. We were in the mountains and was I ever glad that there was a ditch. I remember climbing out of the car and wondering why I was still alive. All of us could have easily been killed and yet not one of us was hurt. Lord, why did you spare my life? Then I remembered my promise to the Lord almost 12 years earlier. The accident had been a wake-up call. I applied for seminary in faith that He would provide and that’s why I’m here today. I have committed my life to serving our God.
Since then, I have been the English congregation pastor for two Chinese churches (one in Vancouver and one in Calgary) before joining CIM Canada in 2012 as the Director of Ghana Ministries before taking on the role as Executive Director in 2016. It is a honour to be able to share the gospel of Jesus Christ cross-culturally.
