Meet Mordecai
Thank you for praying with me as we began our daily classes with the children and youth of Nyankpala. You may recall my mention of Mordecai, a fellow Evangelical Church of Ghana member from the area. We have been working together since September, teaching the children bible stories and activities.
I’d love to introduce you to my brother in Christ, Mordecai. I know I have been greatly encouraged by his testimony and I’m certain his story will bless you too.
“In the Northern Region (of Ghana), Islam is about 90% or so here. I came to know Christ in 2005. At that time, a missionary came to our place. He showed a video about Jesus Christ. After the film, they did an altar call, but I didn’t come forward. But, what I saw in the film was still inside my heart. For a few months, there was something like a desire pushing me to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord. So, after talking to a (Christian) friend, I went to church with him the next day. There, they led me into a prayer to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and personal savior.
My dad was a strong Muslim and traditionalist. He even gave me charms and other things, and didn’t want me to leave those things. But, because of the desire that was coming out of me (to follow Christ), I didn’t listen to him. Because of that, my father prevented me from attending school and church again. At times, I would be beaten and chased out of the house. However, I kept attending bible classes by another missionary organization. They would often conduct competitions about the bible, and I won it three times! Once, my prize was a bag. When I brought the bag home, my father told me to pack all my things in the bag and to leave his house. Unfortunately, my father passed away in 2013, but I was then able to continue my education and complete Senior High School in 2016.
I started teaching children bible stories in 2008. I have always had that zeal. Whenever I go to any place, the first people I interact with are the children! My mother used to call me, “Children’s Friend.” I remember some of the things Sunday school teachers were telling us. When I was growing up, I would think, “So, what does that mean?” It will impress upon me to see it through the Scriptures and it began unfolding. I want that to be a part of the children’s lives.
When my brother in Christ, Bartholomew, saw that I have that kind of zeal to work with the children, he invited me to be a part of starting the ECG mission school in Tolon in 2017. We have the zeal to reach out to our people, and it starts with the children.”
Your prayer support and financial partnership help CIM Canada in partnership with ECG support ministries like the ECG village schools, much like the ECG mission school in Tolon, where Mordecai teaches. I can’t thank every single one of you enough for taking the time to pray for us, encourage us and bless us and the people of Ghana.
God bless you,
Janice Wong
